traditional

 

"We are gathered here to unite NAME 1 and NAME 2 in marriage, which is held in honor among all people. Those who enter into this relationship must learn to cherish a mutual esteem and love; to bear with each other's strengths and weaknesses; to comfort each other in sickness, trouble and sorrow; with honesty to provide for each other, and to live together as heirs of the grace of life."

(Option: “Who gives this woman/man to be married to this woman/man?”)

(Option: "If there is anyone present, who knows of any just cause why this couple may not be lawfully joined in marriage, make it now known or forever after keep your peace.")

 

(To Person 1:)

"PERSON 1, will you have this woman/man to be your wife/husband/partner, in all love and honor, in all duty and service, in all faith and tenderness, to live with her/him and cherish her/him, in the bond of marriage? If so, answer: I will."

(Person 1 shall answer): "I will."

 

(To Person 2):

"Person 2, will you have this woman/man to be your wife/husband/partner, in all love and honor, in all duty and service, in all faith and tenderness, to live with her/him and cherish her/him, in the bond of marriage? If so, answer: I will."

(Person 2 shall answer): "I will."

 

(Person 1 and Person 2 join hands - repeat the following, Person 1 first, then Person 2):

"I, PERSON 1, take thee, PERSON 2, to be my wedded spouse.  I promise before these witnesses to be thy loving and faithful spouse, in good times and bad, in joy and in sorrow, in sickness and in health, as long as we both shall live."

"I, PERSON 2, take thee, PERSON 1, to be my wedded spouse.  I promise before these witnesses to be thy loving and faithful spouse, in good times and bad, in joy and in sorrow, in sickness and in health, as long as we both shall live."

(After Person 1 and Person 2 have said the above, Person 1 shall put the ring on the Person 2's left hand and repeat):

"This ring I give you,  in token and in pledge, of our constant faith and abiding love."

(Have Person 2 place ring on left hand of Person 1, and have Person 2 repeat):

"This ring I give you,  in token and in pledge, of our constant faith and abiding love."

"May the love and joy you both feel today continue forever."

"By the authority committed unto me by American Marriage Ministries and the State of Nebraska, I declare that PERSON 1 andPERSON 2 are now husband and wife/wife and wife/husband and husband/lawfully wedded."

"Family and friends, we are gathered together to join PERSON 1 with PERSON 2 and in the celebration of their marriage."

"Marriage is a commitment to life — and to the best that two people can find and bring out in each other.  It offers opportunities for growth and sharing that no other human relationship can equal — a physical and emotional joining that is promised for a lifetime."

(To Person 1):

"PERSON 1 , do you declare in the presence of these witnesses that you take PERSON 2 to be your lawfully wedded wife/husband/partner? If so, answer: "I will."

(Person 1 answers): "I will"

"Will you love her/him, comfort her/him, honor and stand by her/him in sickness and in health, and be faithful only unto her/him so long as you both shall live? If so, answer: I will."

(Person 1 answers): "I will"

 

(To Person 2):

"PERSON 2, do you declare in the presence of these witnesses that you take PERSON 1 to be your lawfully wedded wife/husband/partner? If so, answer: I will."

(Person 2 answers): "I will"

(To Person 1):

"PERSON 1, repeat after me:

(To Person 2):

(To Person 1):

(Person 1 places ring on Person 2's left hand)

(Person 2 places ring on Person 1's left hand)

 

(To audience):

"When two people pledge to love and care for each other in marriage, they create a spirit unique to themselves, which binds them closer than any spoken or written words.  Marriage is a promise, a potential, made in the hearts of two people who love, which takes a lifetime to fulfill."

"With these vows taken and these rings exchanged, and by the authority vested in me by American Marriage Ministries and the State of Nebraska, I pronounce you husband and wife/wife and wife/husband and husband/lawfully wedded."

Custom

 

If you would prefer to adapt your vows from the examples above or write completely custom vows, you are welcome to do so and provide them to me to read on your wedding day.  

Your vows should include a declaration of intent (the "I do" or "I will"), and be written in a script format like the "Traditional", "Modern", and "Simple" vows above.
